Office Space, Lighting in an Office Space

Lighting can be very important to an office space. It can mean the difference between leaving work in a good mood or leaving with a headache. It can also mean seeing the letter 'o' versus seeing the number '0' on a piece of paper. So what things should be considered when lighting an office space?

First it may be important to determine the type of work to be performed in the office space. Florescent lighting is good for lighting a large area, but not necessarily bright lighting. If it is decided that florescent lighting is desired, it may be necessary to supply separate desk or table lamps to add brighter lighting when needed. Incandescent lighting offers a bright alternative to florescent lighting, but over a smaller space, so where one florescent light is necessary, the same office space may require two incandescent lights. If there is a large amount of computer work done and very little paperwork, the dimmer light might be preferable to the employees working on the computers. An office space that does more paperwork then computer work might be more suitable for brighter lights to limit straining while reading.

Anyone who has worked on a computer for any length of time knows that glare from the lights above reflecting in the computer screen can cause headaches. So how can an office space be glare friendly? The first step should be to adjust the computer screen to avoid the glare from the overhead lights, however this does not always work. If adjusting the screen does not provide relief, the employer can provide glare screens for the computers in the office space or the employees can purchase them for themselves. Glare can also be reflected from the sun. The solution for this might simply be rearranging the office space so that the computer is turned away from the windows. If it is not possible to turn the computer away from the windows, make sure that blinds are operational to block sunlight from shining on the computer.

If the office space is going to be used for customer relations, consider a lighting that will be inviting. A very bright light might not be desirable to a customer, nor may a very dim light. A light in an office space should not be so bright that the customers are shielding their eyes when they come in from outside, nor should it be so dim that they are straining to read. If the customers are shielding their eyes, it might be appropriate to use an opaque fixture or even a frosted fixture to reduce the glare from the bulb. If it appears that the customers are straining to read the information in front of them, it might be appropriate to add a lamp, change the existing overhead light to a brighter one, or add another overhead light.

To conclude, office space lighting can be very important. Some things to consider would be how bright the lights need to be to perform efficiently, glare prevention, and customer comfort.
