Office Space, Comfort in an office space |
 |
When an employee is stuck at a desk in his or her office space for eight hours, sustenance can sometimes be needed. It can be comforting just to be able to grab a cold drink or have a quick snack between the start time and lunchtime or between lunchtime and the end of the shift. So how much comfort should be offered to an employee?
If the office space is full of high tech equipment, it may not be wise to allow just any food or drink at the desk. Some employers allow only a spill proof drink in the office space. Others allow minimal snacking and a spill proof drink. While still others have no limitation on the amount of food and drink allowed at the desk in the office space. If the employees are not allowed to have food or drink in their office space, there should be a designated area in which they are allowed to eat and drink. Many companies have a separate break room for this, while some companies only have a portion of an office space designated for eating and drinking.
If the office space has little to no high tech equipment, there may be no limitations regarding food or drink in the office space. Employees may even be allowed to eat a meal at their desk. While food and drink may be allowed in the office space, employers may still find it advantageous to have a break room. The break room allows an employee to get away from their office space for a time and relax completely from the work at hand. It also allows for employee bonding.
Other comforts can be offered to employees. These may be in the office space itself, the break room, or a separate place all together. They can include coffee or cocoa, soda or snack machines, plastic silverware and napkins, a microwave, pain reliever, a first aid kit, and sanitary napkins. Some employers provide few or all of these items either directly in the office space, the break room, or a designated area. Some of these things can be directly in the office space, such as pain reliever and a first aid kit, for quick access. If the office space is equipped with a microwave, ensure that it is in proper working order. An item meant to comfort employees won't be very comforting if it is not available for use. These are not the only amenities an employer can offer to make an office space more comfortable for the employees. Comforts can be a valuable asset to the employer, since they may indicate to the employees the value they place on the employee.
In conclusion, because employees spend so many hours in their office space, an employer should strive to make the office space as comfortable as possible. A comfortable employee is a productive employee. There are many comforts to choose from, including, but not limited to, approved food and drink, coffee or cocoa, and vending machines. |
