Office Space, Tips on Dealing With a Shared Office Space

According to recent studies, nearly four out of every ten Americans shares an office space with a coworker. This number has increased greatly over the last several years. Now, it is about 37% of employees sharing office space; ten years ago, it was only about 11% of office workers. This is quite a drastic difference.

Because of this, more people have had to figure out how to get along in the close quarters of an office space with their colleagues on a daily basis. And, for some, this isn’t so easy. So, here are some tips on how to cope with sharing an office space with a coworker.

First of all, understand that your coworker is probably not very happy about the situation, either. Unless the two of you are great pals--which isn’t at all likely because management generally doesn’t pair up friends in the same office space for reasons of work productivity-neither one of you is exactly excited about the idea of sharing an office space.

Next, remember that you really do not have much of a choice here. Sure, you could try to go to your superior and complain-but would that really accomplish anything? Chances are, probably not. So, it is best to just try to deal with the situation.

The main issue in sharing an office space is respect. If you show that you intend to be respectful of your office mate, he will most likely reciprocate in kind. So, make sure that you show consideration for the other person. Take messages accurately and completely whenever necessary. Do not attempt to procure his accounts or clients when he is out of town or ill-help with them, certainly, but do not try to appropriate them. Just make sure to act respectful.

You also want to remember to be kind to your office mate. Find out what he enjoys as a snack and bring it to him once in awhile. Or offer to grab his coffee for him every now and then. Don’t confuse kindness with trying to curry favor with someone, however; you do not need to fawn over the person with whom you share an office space. You merely want to be nice, like you would with any other acquaintance. This will help you to build a good working relationship with this person, meaning that you and your office mate will be able to get along better.

When decorating the office space, work with your office mate. Of course, you are free to put whatever you like on your desk and file cabinet. But, when it comes to bigger items, such as a large-scale painting, it is best to check with your office mate. After all, think about how you would feel if your office mate displayed a giant painting without checking with you first-and it turned out that you hated the painting?

Shared office spaces are more common nowadays than ever. Chances are, they will continue to be common in many businesses. But, as long as you act respectful and kind to your office mate, you can learn to make it work.
