Office Space, The Incredibly Shrinking Office Space |
Every business owner would love to hear that the business has outgrown its office space. Unless they are simply hiring too many employees. For those who have truly outgrown their office space due to increase in sales, increase in customers, or an increase in product; adding more office space can be challenging and stressful. How can you minimize the stress involved in adding more office space to the business?
First decide the amount of revenue available for the office space. If the current building is being rented or just the current office space, account for the amount being used for monthly rent. If moving to a larger building is financially viable, then take the time to look at different buildings. Don’t rent the first place viewed. Consider how many employees are currently employed in the company, and based on past performance, how many more are expected to be acquired in a certain time frame. This can be done in five, ten, or twenty year increments. While needing to move due to growth is always desirable, having to move many times can put undue strain on the entire company.
Moving to a new building can be stressful not only on the company, and the employee who has to get used to a new office space, but also to the customers. Nothing is more confusing or frustrating to a customer then going to a building they have been doing business in for any length of time and find the business has moved. Even if the customer has been told the business is moving and they forget, they can still get frustrated at having driven to the business to find it closed. Then having to turn around and drive to the new business.
If the building is owned, it can be expanded or remodeled to accommodate the needed office space. While remodeling can be stressful on the customer as well as the employees, it might not be nearly as stressful as moving to a whole new building. An office space should be set up as far away from the actual remodeling as possible so the employees and customers alike do not have to bear the brunt of the noise and dust from the construction.
If remodeling will not give enough office space, consider adding a whole new wing to the building. Not only will this give the added office space, but it will be quieter and cleaner for the customers and the employees. A whole new wing can be as small as a few offices, or as large as many offices, break rooms, bathrooms, and reception areas depending on land space. Again, this will depend on projected growth for the company.
To summarize, it can be an exciting time to have to expand the office space for a business. It can also be a stressful time. Financial viability must be considered, stress on customers and stress on employees should also be considered, and land available for the expansion must be considered. |
