Office Space, Staying Organized When Working in Both a Home Office Space and a Business Office Space |
When part of your workday involves spending time in a home office space, you know that it is essential to be incredibly organized. You must have a good system for keeping control of your paperwork and other necessities. If you don’t, you may find that you have left some important documents at your home office space just at the moment when you really need them at your business office space. Or vice versa, of course. Either way, though, it definitely is not something you wish to have happen under any circumstances.
So, you need to come up with an organizational system that will easily work with both your business office space and your home office space, allowing for items to travel between the two locations. Don’t worry, though-it sounds more complicated than it actually is. Here are some ideas on how to keep both office spaces organized.
First of all, make sure to use the pocket type of file folders for all files. These are the folders that are enclosed on the sides. Sure, these files are a little more expensive than standard file folders; however, the enclosed sides ensure that documents will not slide out the sides. This is an important feature for anyone who works in both a business office space and a home office space. This is because paperwork can easily slide out of regular file folders during transport between office spaces.
Next, stay organized by using different colors of file folders for different purposes. You can designate one color for files that are never to leave the business office space and another color for files that are never to leave your home office space. Then, you can use other colors to indicate other types of files. The way you allocate the other colors will depend upon your business.
Computer files may also need to travel from one office space to the other. While you can certainly use whatever electronic storage method you prefer, it may be easiest to use a USB drive. Get one that you will use only for work purposes-no music or personal files on this drive. And, you can opt to purchase one that is also a keychain. This way, you can have your USB drive right there with your car keys, so you will be certain never to forget to bring it when travelling from one office space to the other.
Some items, though, should just not travel. It would be simpler to have one calculator at each office space, for example. And, if you have a favorite pen with which you prefer to write, keep one at each office space location. The same goes for any small, inexpensive item. It just makes better sense to do this rather than tote every item back and forth every day.
As a final organizational tip, it can greatly help to write down lists. Before you leave one office space, write down what you are taking with you. This list can come in handy later is you cannot recall at which home office a certain file was last. |
