Office Space, Setting Limits in the Home Office Space |
Setting limits is something we are taught from a young age. This is important in the home office space. Many people will try to invade your space. They will think you working from home is a fad or a hobby. They will not realize this is your job unless you set some limits.
You must let your family and friends know you are serious about your work. You must set limits on visits and phone calls when you are in your office space. You can not spend hours talking and visiting. You will get nothing accomplished. Once you explain to your family and friends that they can not interrupt you while you are in your office space, you will have to show them you are serious. When you stick to your guns and continue to treat their calls and visits as interruptions they will get the message.
The limits you set must also apply to yourself. You can work yourself to death with the office space being in the house. You may be tempted to run in right before bed to check your e-mail. Do not do this. Set limits in the form of time blocks. A time block is a period of time you have dedicated to work. This can be broken down into hour long or two hour long sessions. Setting up time blocks for your time in the office space allows you to schedule appointments and meetings around your schedule. If you have parent teacher conferences, you can set the time blocks for the morning and later in the evening. This leaves the afternoon free for the conference. You still get your work done and make the conference.
Time blocks should not fill the entire day. You will need to take a break for lunch. Even if the only thing you accomplish during this time is sorting the laundry or putting away the clean dishes you need the break. The home office space can become chain around your neck if you let it become one. You must be able to separate yourself from your office space in order to have a clear head. You chose to work from home for a reason. If you are always in your office space no-one will ever see you. It becomes pointless to be home working if you are always in the home office space. Setting limits allows you to know when to work and when to spend time with your family. |
