When you choose to work from a home office space you are taking on a large project. People seem to think now that you are home they can call or come over at any time. They do not understand this home office space is where you work now. Nothing has changed but the location of your job. There are ways to boost productivity while working from a home office space.
The first thing you can do is put a door on your home office space. If this is not feasible then implement some rules. For instance, you can set guidelines that makes people know when you are in your home office space you are not to be bothered. If there is a knock at the door or the phone rings the proper response should be that you are working.
If you need to, rearrange the home office space so that it is more noticeable that the area is a work area. This deters many people from entering into the home office space. When a guest comes into the home they should be told the home office space is not for visitors. This lets everyone know from the start that you are working and can not be disturbed.
The "To Do" list is always a great way to boost production in the home office space. You should always have a list started in the morning to let you know what you should be doing for the day. As you accomplish each task cross it off the list. If you do not get to finish the list by the time you are done for the day, add what ever tasks you need to work on for the next day. You then have your list for the next day. Keep this list in one location of your home office space so you can locate it each morning. As long as you know what you need to do then there is little chance you will not finish a project.
When you are working so hard there needs to be time for you. Having the office space in the house can sometimes mean working through break times and lunch. This is not how to boost production. Working like this will burn yourself out. You must take regular breaks just like if you were working in a regular office space. This will give you a few minutes to start a load of laundry or just to take a break away from the stress of work. Everyone needs a break from the office space just to be able to clear their heads. Going back into the office space with a fresh mind can accomplish so much more than putting your nose to the grind stone for hours on end.
One final thing that will boost production in the home office space more than anything is making sure people know you are to be taken serious. Many times when you start working from home people think you have all the time in the world. They think you can sit for hours on the phone or are able to laze the day away. You need to make it very clear that you are working. The home office space is there so you can make money from home. It is not there as a hobby. The sooner your friends and family realize you are serious about your endeavor the sooner your production level will go up. |
