Office Space, Partitions in an Office Space

It would be nice if every employee could have their own office space, but in some businesses that isn’t always feasible. A company that has hundreds or even thousands of employees would find it hard pressed to find an individual office for every single one of them. So how can every employee have his or her own office space without putting a huge demand on the company funds?

The answer is simple. The office space can be divided by partitions, so that each employee has his or her own personal office space, but for a reasonable price. This allows the business to work from an open plan blueprint. The question is, how much personal office space and privacy should each employee have?

There is such a wide variety in options when choosing partitions for an office space. If full privacy is required, partitions which fully enclose an area, thus providing an actual physical boundary on all four sides can be installed. This can provide a quieter environment and the ability to work privately. These types of partitions can be moved and changed as often as necessary to accommodate growth in the company. With this type of partition, it is very close to each employee having his or her own traditional office space.

If slightly less privacy is desired, consider a partition that has three walls. This gives visual privacy without separating an employee completely from other employees. So how much privacy is alloted in this partition? That depends on the extent of the partition. Some three-walled partitions extend only to the desk and slightly beyond leaving just enough room for the employee to sit with his or her back to the walkway. These can be quite tall, or extend just to the top of the employee’s head or sometimes lower. Others provide a larger area for the employee to move around inside the partitioned area, but without a physical door. While this gives more visual privacy then no partition at all, it doesn’t help much with acoustic privacy. It may muffle some noise, but it will not stop the noise completely.

If this is still too much privacy or doesn’t suit the physical area of the building compared to the number of employees that will use the space, there is still one more option. A single wall partition. This is generally placed in front of the employee so that it is between two employees who face each other. This provides almost no privacy at all, but does provide the employee with peace of mind, since it can be difficult to work with the feeling of being watched. This doesn’t prevent employees located to the left, right, and directly behind from watching, nor does it prevent someone from coming up to stand behind the employee from watching.

To conclude, partitions can be a more cost effective method of providing personal office space for all employees. Depending on how much personal office space is needed it can be a full enclosure, three walls, or simply a single wall.
