Office Space, Comfortable Office Space |
While high value is placed on aesthetics of a room or environment, looking pretty isn’t going to help an office space if it is not effective. One thing that every employee and office occupant wants is comfort. So what makes an office space comfortable?
Unfortunately there is no one answer, simply because every person is built differently. A taller person will not feel comfortable sitting in a short chair, nor will a short person feel comfortable in a tall chair. Not only should the chair be considered, but the desk, and the height of the monitor. In essence, the position of nearly everything in the office contributes to the comfort of the office space. A monitor should be eye level, a keyboard should be in a position so that the elbows can stay close to the body and be supported. A comfortable office space is one that adjusts to every person who occupies it.
So why is comfort so important? There are two reasons. The first is employee satisfaction. An employee with a sore back from sitting in an uncomfortable chair is not as enthusiastic about going to work as one who feels physically relaxed when leaving. Not to mention that work is stressful enough as it is, without adding the stress of an uncomfortable office space. The second is proficiency. When employees are comfortable in their office space, they can concentrate on what they are there to do in the first place.
Another thing that is important in an office space, regardless of size, is accessibility. Even in the largest office all supplies and equipment must be easily accessible. If an employee can’t get to the equipment necessary to perform the job, it doesn’t help anyone. An employee that has to rearrange the entire office space to perform a task is not going to want to perform that task very often. The computer, printer, fax machine, paper, pens, pencils, even the most minute objects necessary to perform the task should be quickly available in order for an efficient office space.
One final thing that an office space should have is communication. Whether the employee is communicating with other office employees, or with customers, communication is essential for keeping operations current. If the office space is set up to communicate with customers, it should be easily done. A customer coming in to communicate face to face is not going to want to see the employee fumbling around the desk looking for a pen or pencil or paper to take notes on. So consider how communications are going to be relayed to the necessary personnel. Whether it is a memo, an order form, or simply a phone call; every office space should have a form of communication that is readily available.
To sum it up, an office space should be comfortable, accessible and have the ability to communicate vital information to other offices or customers in order to function to its maximum potential. Even the smallest office space can be inviting with the right design and supplies. |
