Office Space, Office Space Politics

Everyone has either seen or heard the effects of office space politics. Not every office space has politics, but everyone has heard of it. So what is office space politics?

Office space politics is the use of power in the company. It can also be the misuse. An employee who gains favor with the boss but receives little or no disciplinary action with infractions, seems to gain from this type of politic. This can cause disputes among employees as the one that seems to receive special treatment can be shunned and resented by other employees. No one likes to think that no matter how hard they work, the boss is never going to recognize them.

This may appear to those watching to be a clear cut case of favoritism. Add in the fact that the employee whose actions are never punished is the brother to the bosses boss, and it may make a person wonder. Is it really all about who you know and not what you know? Is the boss treating the employee that way to get in good with his boss? This is one of the reasons that most companies make policies against hiring family members to work the same departments.

So is there ever a time when office space politics are good? Occasionally. When a person in charge sees that the office space in which he runs is in need of some better equipment, he can use politics with his boss to get the much needed equipment, thus improving his department. The department got what it needed, the employees in the work space are happy that they have new equipment and no resentment has arisen from this situation.

Many companies would prefer there be no office space politics at all. Unfortunately, most office spaces have politics whether or not it is preferable. It should be a matter of whether it is hurting the office space or helping it.

In a situation where the office space politics is causing great discord among the employees, it should be squashed immediately. A manager or supervisor should not be allowed to take favorites and ignore the hard work of others. If this is happening, maybe it is time for a new manager or supervisor. If it is not happening but one of the employees feels it is happening, it may be time for a meeting between all people involved. The employee can explain what makes him or her feel that way and it can be validated or discounted. In this way the issue can be brought to the open and there may be a chance to fix the problem and continue on. In some instances, there is no way to fix it. It has either happened for too long, or it is simply a perceived occurrence and not a real occurrence.

In the company, this should be addressed at the very beginning. Holding employees accountable according to their performance is a good policy. Sadly, politics are probably here to stay, but it doesn’t have to be a bad thing and if it is creating disturbances, it should be addressed immediately.
