Office Space, Work is a 30-Second Commute Away |
 |
For some of us, home and work are two separate locations --- within the house that is. Tired of fighting morning and evening traffic congestion, bad weather, and most of all, those people who drive like they just got their license out of a Cracker Jacks box? Well that's exactly why you started your work-at-home career isn't it? Oh, but I bet I bet that 30-second commute from the bedroom, down the hallway, to your office space and that nice new office chair that you treated yourself to is just breaking your heart.
If this is a scenario you'd love to be living, there is no better time than now to go for it. Adventuring into a work-at-home career is the dream for a lot of people, but has already become realities for others. Ten years ago, there were already 46 million Americans working in a home office space environment. Most recent statistics now show that 54% of all homeowners say that they have an office in their home or at least a room that is easily convertible into one. And 70% who have a home office also have personal computers in them.
Real estate trends now show that new home designs have come under great scrutiny to the necessity of home office space. Not only that, but for every prospective home buyer or builder, that home office can come in all locations, shapes, and sizes within that new home. Recent trends are showing that the separate outbuildings --- i.e. "casita" or "mother-in-law quarters" --- is once again growing in popularity. Still other trends are showing that new homes are being built with three and four car garages, wherein part of that is designed to be office space as well.
Based on how focused and sensitive the type of work that you will be engaged in will determine where you locate your home office, also. A more remote location in the house solves the problems of heavy foot traffic and noise, especially if you have children. Should you be planning on having your office immediately inside the front door off the entryway, then you should consider putting a solid door (or double doors if you want to get fancy) at the entrance to that office space. Still others like the idea of the French door entrance to an office, especially where children and tidiness are not issues.
Finally, what is very apparent is that office space in the home is not only a priority in homes due to the growth of the work-at-home industry, but it is also becoming one of the more sensitively planned areas within the home. It's no secret that the terms home-based business and telecommuter are key buzzwords and the concepts need to be addressed with priority and respect. New home buyers nationwide are making builders and the residential construction industry sit up and take notice. The best part about it, is that while you are enjoying your 30-second commute to and from work everyday, your neighbor is still backing out his driveway to go fight congestion on the freeway. |
