Office Space, My Office Equipment is Eating My Desk

In the past, I was employed in retail furniture sales and people who were renovating their office space would ask a lot of questions. But one of the first ones was usually, "what kind of a desk should I buy?" I would usually respond with a question like, "What do you want the desk to do?" In other words, "what do you need to have on your desk?" It helps to know the equipment (and dimensions of the pieces) in order to get an idea as to what the dimensions of the desk need to be.

Computer desks are available in all shapes and sizes. Those of you who are educated consumers and serious shoppers know exactly how broad the assortment of desks can be when you’re shopping for one to enhance your office space. The following is a list of the examples of what is available on the market. And I’m only going to deal with veneer types of furniture, not the RTA types that are everywhere you look.

Characteristically, when your office space is very compact (even cramped or crowded), your first option, if you don’t have the room for a true desk, is to look at computer carts. These are normally 30" - 36" wide and 24" deep. If your desktop comes with a flat panel monitor, there will be room for you to do ordinary paperwork in front of it. But there won’t be room for much else.

In the body of the cart there is normally a keyboard pull-out, which when fully extended is also where your legs are tucked under, sort of like a real desk. There are other compartments inside the cart, specifically a tower area, and possibly, another pullout to mount your printer on. It is open-faced so everything is readily accessible, and usually mounted on casters for mobility purposes.

The next step up is the "half-computer" desk as I call it. These are generally 48" wide x 24" deep. Normally, a person’s office space will accommodate one of these. They come with a keyboard pull-out, a file drawer, and a regular drawer. The drawback is that oftentimes, these do not come with a tower space, which means that you will need to either put it by your feet on the floor (not recommended), or set it on the top of your desk, therefore eating up valuable workspace.

They do make 48" wide desks that have the tower area below the top of the desk, however, they usually skimp on leg space so that it can accommodate the tower space. Also, if you put it on the floor, be sure to put it on a small piece of wood to keep it off the carpet, Static electricity in a carpet can trash a hard drive.

The desk I chose for my office space is 60" wide x 24" deep, because it has facilitated most of my equipment and I still have plenty of work space. These have a keyboard pull-out, tower space, usually two standard drawers, and a file drawer. I use one this size, and I not only have my 17" flat panel monitor on it, but also my stacking trays, and my All-in-One printer. And I have tons of work space to use when I am not on the computer writing content like this.

There are bigger sizes up to 72" wide x 36" deep, but these are not for every office space. Just remember to find the one that will fit in your office and be as functional as possible in order to meet your needs.
