Office Space, Equipment, Fixtures/Furniture, and Accessories |
In the process of setting up your office space, and making the assumption that you are going to purchase all new fixtures and furniture, once you have finished with all your measuring and committed it to paper carefully, it’s probably time to think about fixtures and furniture that you need. The emphasis is on the word need here. Don’t confuse that with wants --- you’ll be in serious trouble before you ever get started.
The first rule of thumb is that the type of work you do will mandate what you need in the way of fixtures and furniture for your office space. The basic home office normally operates efficiently when you have taken the proper equipment, fixtures, furniture, and accessories/luxuries into consideration. So we’ll break those down by category including the basic items needed to operate your business effectively and efficiently. And just so you know a little more about me, when it comes to my office space, I am what you would call AYO - Anal Yet Organized. Remember, these are the basics with just a touch of extravagance added.
Equipment
- Calculator
- Computer, monitor, printer (all-in-one preferred since you can copy, fax, print, and scan with it)
- Handset/Headset with microphone
- Stapler
- Telephone and/or fax machine
Fixtures/Furniture
- Bookcase(s)
- Cabinet(s) for storing office supplies
- Desk with 1 or 2 drawers, file drawer, and keyboard pullout --- 60" wide x 24" deep is minimum; 66" x 30" is better
- File Cabinet --- depending on your needs, either a two-drawer or four-drawer
- Office chair (make sure this is comfortable --- you’ll be spending a lot of time sitting in it)
Accessories/Luxuries (be careful and don’t overspend here, unless you can afford it)
- Countertop refrigerator --- definitely a luxury, but nice to be able to offer your clients a cold soda or bottled water on a hot day.
- Desktop and drawer organizers --- helps keep these areas clean and neat, and gives you more available work space on your desk
- Desktop fan (nice to have, even with central air in your office space)
- Paper shredder --- never hand tear and throw away documents that are identity sensitive. Besides that, if you save the shredding, you have instant packing material should you ever need to move.
Obviously, this is just a basic list and I’m sure that I could come up with other goodies to add to it. Just remember that there is this thing called a budget, and as far as I can remember, none of them are ever limitless or open-ended. The rule of thumb that I have always used is that when you define what you need in your office space, make sure you really need it --- in other words, that you can’t conduct your business without it. There is nothing worse than over-spending, especially when it comes to depleting cash reserves for other incidentals that arise out of a more urgent need. |
