Office Space, Managing Your Home and Work Balance in Your Home Office Space

When you have an office space at home, it can be difficult at times to keep your personal life separate from your working life. Especially when you have children-kids have trouble understanding that it is important for Mommy or Daddy to work uninterrupted in the home office space.

But, there are some ways to make this work life-personal life separation a little bit easier. Here are some tips.

For one, if you have children who do not understand what office space is or why a parent must work in there, chances are it is going to be difficult to get them to stop barging in all of the time. One way to deal with this is to give the children their own section of the office space in which they can "work" when a parent is working. Children's desks are small and rather inexpensive and often come with chairs. Set one of these up in a spot of your office space. Now, any time that one of the kids comes in and interrupts, don't say a word-simply point to the children's desk. You can have the children's desk stocked with coloring books, crayons, blank paper, pencils, stickers, and more. The kids will soon come to understand that this is their "work" and they can do this whenever a parent is doing work in the office space.

Another tip involves timing. Set aside specific blocks of time each day for working in your office space. Let your family know that during these blocks of time, you are not to be interrupted unless there is an emergency. Stick firmly to this schedule. If your family sees that you are strict about staying in your office space and working during those times, they will begin to respect that. But, if you only follow your schedule some of the time, your family will not take you seriously when you tell them you need uninterrupted time in your office space.

Also, treat working in your home office space as imperative working time. It can be tempting to go to work in your office space in your pajamas and house slippers, but you will not get the feeling of being professional if you are not dressed for the part of working. Now, this isn't to say that you need to dress up as much as if you were working in an office building. But, it is important to remember that you are working and you do need to make yourself presentable before doing so. If your family sees that you are taking care to get fit to be seen before working in your home office space, they will get the feeling that you are working a serious job-not the feeling that you are going in your office space to play around and surf the internet.

Of course, working in a home office space will always bring challenges with the work life-home life balance. And, you will always get interruptions. But, if you try these tips, you may find working in your office space at least a little easier.
