Office Space, Humor in an Office Space |
 |
Everyone likes to laugh. But when does humor get out of hand? An office space that doesn't laugh once in a while can be a very boring place to work. Not only does laughing break the tension in an office space, but it creates bonding between employees. The question is how much humor is too much?
It can all start pretty innocently. First one of the employees say something, an innocent crack on the first one, but it's no big deal. It was all in jest. The second employee makes a joke about the first one and it's still pretty innocent. Pretty soon they are pulling office pranks on each other. Instead of concentrating on their work, they are planning the next joke. The work suffers and the business may even start to suffer. All this because one employee made a wisecrack on the other. Has this gotten out of hand?
One of the worst days for large pranks is April Fools Day. Everything from simply hiding office supplies to covering the office with balloons, sticky notes, rubber bands, and any number of other items. Is this just harmless? It may be harmless to the prankster, but it may not be harmless to the employee on the butt end of the prank. There is no point at which you know, this is going to get out of hand. It's probably safer to give the employees limits to follow. Saying something slightly insulting, but with a light mood might be fine.
Laughing at yourself is a necessary stress reliever. Laughing with others can bring a closeness that may not occur during other circumstances. Bringing the office space personnel is an advantage to humor in the office space. Those who laugh together work better together. When they work better, not only does the mood of the office space improve, but the teamwork improves, and those who have bonded and laughed together don't feel any resentment at helping with a work load. It is also said that laughter can actually aid in the healing office. Maybe laughing will lower the number of illnesses in an office space. Share a laugh, scare an illness. It might work.
Whether it is joking about a mistake, laughing at a social blunder, talking about embarrassing moments, or engaging in back-and-forth jabs, laughing can lighten the mood of the office space, and give the employees a chance to bond. Letting it go too far, on the other hand, can be hurtful, distracting, and a possible detriment to the business. Let the employees know their boundaries and stick with them. Humor is okay in the office place, just don't let it get out of hand.
In conclusion, humor is acceptable in the workplace, so long as it is in moderation. It's okay for an office space to be fun. But it is not okay for an office space to cross the line. Not everything that is funny truly funny. One person's funny can be another person's anger. |
