Office Space, How to Fit an Office Space Into a Small Space

More and more people are working from home these days-or, at least, they would like to. But, not everyone has an extra room in his home in which to create an office space. Not everyone has a spare bedroom that can be converted into an office space, either. Nor do all of these people have extra attic or basement space that is suitable for creating a working environment. Nevertheless, these people are not out of luck.

If this sounds like your dilemma, read on. There are a few ways that an office space can be tucked in to a small spot in your home. Even if you think you have no room for a desk, there may be a way for you to make a home office space. Here are some suggestions to try.

One idea involves a closet. Perhaps you can use a closet as an office space. It needs to be the wide type of closet-the type that is wide from side to side, but narrow from front to back. Clear the closet out completely (store the items elsewhere in the home). Then, either do some searching for a desk that will fit into that closet (making sure that the doors will close). If you cannot find a desk, you could try making one if you are handy or you could hire someone to make one for you.

Whether you buy or make the desk, add some wall-mounted shelves and a bulletin board to make your office space more complete. Also, make sure there is adequate lighting with which to work in your office space. As for seating at the desk, you can keep a chair near the closet and simply pull the chair over to the desk as needed.

Another idea for a home office space involves adding your office space to your family room area-but, making it blend with the already-present décor so as not to stick out. What you need to do is take a look at your family room and see where a small desk could be added (you may need to move the furniture around to achieve this). Then, go shopping for a desk that matches the décor of the family room. Or, if it works with your decorating scheme better, you could use a tall table instead of a desk.

Add the desk or table in the room, making sure that it is not in any way a focal point of the room-it should be unobtrusive. Do not put a lot of accessories with your office space-stick these in some type of container that matches the room décor (a decorative box, perhaps). As for seating, see if there is a way you could use one of the chairs that is already present in the family room on an as-needed basis. If not, make sure to purchase a chair that matches the décor of the room.

There are, of course, other ways you can fit an office space into your home-just look around your home and be creative. Good luck!
