Office Space, Dress Code in an Office Space |
 |
How many businesses have employees who wear skimpy clothing, have women showing cleavage and men who's pants ride a little too low for comfort? Does that seem professional? Let's discuss what is professional and what a dress code is.
When a customer walks into a business, one of the first things they notice is how the employees are dressed. Many companies prefer a casual business dress. This allows for comfort and style. When employees are comfortable, they work better. Though not to comfortable because they can get to relaxed. While some companies prefer a more strict dress code, such as formal business dress, it is not necessary for all business.
What an employee wears makes a big difference to the customer. Customers may think that a company that doesn't think enough about it's dress code can't handle making good business decisions. Unfortunately in business, it is all about appearances.
Not only does the attire that is chosen for work affect the customers, it affects other employees. An employee who is distracted because a shirt is too low or a jacket has an offensive logo on it, will be unable to work effectively. A dress code is implemented to give a professional appearance, but also to keep the employees focused on their work. An office space that has an effective dress code minimizes distractions and maximizes a good customer image.
The question is how strict should the dress code be. If no customers are being greeted in the office space, it might be that the dress code can be a bit more relaxed. On the other hand if an office space will be greeting customers it might be better to have a more strict dress code so that the office space has a very professional appearance.
With heavy physical labor, an employee should be able to wear very comfortable clothing. In a warehouse setting, not only should the clothing be comfortable, it should also be safe. Loose clothing may pose a hazard as would shorts and open-toed shoes. Falling equipment and tripping make it necessary to have dress codes.
Another thing to consider is the company uniform. Should all the employees in an office space wear the same outfit? This would cut down on fashion competition and take the guess work out of what might be appropriate for an office space. On the other hand it could cost the business more if they provide the uniform. Also, if a uniform has the company name and logo on it, it is advertising the business. Free advertising is always good.
In conclusion, a dress code can bring a sense of professionalism to an office space. It also prevents in distractions to co-workers. In addition to professionalism, it can serve as a safety measure. If a dress code is desired, but the company would like a uniform, the uniform can give free advertising. Whatever dress code is chosen, it should be in the best interest of the company and the office space. |
