Office Space, Does your business need more office space?

One problem with failed businesses is not knowing when to grow. A business that grows too fast can find it's self closed down. People lose their jobs. The office space goes back on the market. A new business moves in and the cycle starts all over again. Before you expand determine what you could benefit from more office space.

You may find that it is not the office space creating the problem. The office space may be just fine. It is the way the office space is being utilized that is the drawback. Take a look at how you are using the office space your business now occupies. If it seems overcrowded from all the cubicles, think about change. Work areas that are spreading into other work areas may not be a sign you have to move. It may be a sign you have to redesign.

Business owners get excited when they realize that profits are up and sales are through the roof. They see that the employees are busy working to supply the demand. The workers are using every available inch of office space to get projects done before deadline. The business owner may think it is time to expand. It probably is not the right time to go looking for a larger office space. The business owner needs to assess the situation to see what is really happening.

The office space a business is using is the right size if the work is still getting done and no new employees have been brought on board. A bigger office space is needed when there are more people than there is space. The growing company does not need to change a system that is already working. Make sure the company is really growing before changing the office space or anything else. You can do this by determining how many new people have been hired in the past few months.

A company which is generating more business does not necessarily need more employees. Many times the present staff can handle the work load just fine. It is the office space that needs to be changed. This may mean creating shared work stations instead of cubicles. The office space may need a conference room for more meetings. The old room was just too small. Renovations may be in order, but many times it is just a matter of rearranging the furniture.

Think of the office space you use as a household expecting a baby. The baby turns out to be twins. The household just rearranges to make more room. When the office space is rearranged you may find the room you need to expand without really expanding. This can save money.

The business that expands too quickly by moving to a larger office space and taking on more employees will also expand the expense account. This cuts into profits. When the profits go down the business can go right with it. Keeping the profits up means waiting to move into a larger office space when you can really afford to do so.

Before you rush out to spend more money, make sure you are utilizing the office space you have to it's fullest potential. Rearrange the furniture. Be creative and expand from the inside. Put unused office space to work for you. Your employees may have a few suggestions that will work. After all, the office space is where they spend most of their time. The employees will know how to make it work without spending more money on an office space you may not need.
