Office Space, Decorating your office space |
 |
It is always a question of how to decorate when you first move into a new office space. You want the room to reflect who you are but you also want to keep it from going over the top. Some simple rules are keep it simple and keep it neutral. The office space is a place to be creative and work. The office space must reflect that when you decide what to decorate with.
Any office space should always remain professional, even the home office space. You can only be as productive as your surroundings. If your office space is filled with comfy couches and cushiony chairs, rethink the furniture. Many times you may find your self sitting on the couch only to start feeling tired and ready for a nap. This is counterproductive to the office space. You want furniture that is comfortable but not that comfortable. Get rid of the couch and add two chairs and a table. Overstuffed chairs should be replaced with more business style furniture.
The furniture designed for office spaces is generally a neutral color. This helps to keep the distractions to a minimum. People have found themselves working on a report only to keep staring at a table or chair and wondering what color it really is. Office space furniture should have little to no pattern either. The patterns on a fabric can be just as distraction as the color.
You can add color to the office space with the pictures or even a vase of flowers. When someone enters your office space, you want them to see how well organized you are. You do not want them knowing what your favorite color is. Keep colors to a minimum.
You do want your office space to reflect who you are. You want people to know it is your office when they walk in. If you have degrees or awards you have earned, feel free to hang them on the walls. The more accomplishments you have the more professional some people view you. Try to group plaques and certificates together. For instance any scholastic degrees should be hung together. Humanitarian awards should be hung together. Thank you or recognition awards should all be grouped together in the office space. This just makes it look more uniform and neat.
Family and personal pictures should be kept to a minimum. People tend to talk about pictures. In the office space this can distract from a meeting or make the meeting run over. By keeping the personal photos to two or three this keeps the conversation simple about the pictures. The subject matter in the photos should also be kept simple. Spectacular photos do not belong in the office space. People start asking questions and the next thing you know a half hour has gone by explaining the antics of the photo.
Things in the office space should reflect the type of work you do. The office space should be kept simple and professional. This can still be done with a sense of style and personality. You just need to think of the image you want people to see and make the office space project that image. |
