Office Space, Color in an Office Space |
 |
Colors can bring about various emotions and feelings. Paintings can be full of color and often evoke emotions. Nature is full of color. Anyone who walks into a field of wild flowers can feel the calming affect the bright flowers have on a person. Animals use color to their advantage. A poisonous dart frog is bright yellow and black. A bee is also yellow and black. These are colors that get the attention of other animals, in essence shouting out that either they are poisonous or dangerous in some other way. So what do the colors in an office space say to those who view it?
Cool colors can have a calming effect. Blue like the sky is one of these, but be careful with blue. If the blue is too deep a blue, it can be depressing. If it is too dark a blue, such as navy blue it can make the room appear smaller then it actually is. The right color green can also be calming, but picking the wrong shade of green can give the office space a sickly feeling. Silver can also be calming.
Warm colors can be exciting. Yellow can be cheery and uplifting, gold can give the impression of great wealth. A truly ambitious company may choose to paint an office space gold to remind them of their goal in achieving success. Red is a warm color, but too bright a shade can give way to feelings and impressions of violence. Pink is warm, and has been said to lower aggression. An office space painted in a warm color can be inviting. Warmth is often associated with friendliness. An office space painted in a warm color might be saying this company cares about the customer.
Neutral colors mean a unifying. For a company who wants the employees to be unified, brown, beige, white, black , or gray can give an office space an earthy feel. Be careful with the neutral colors thought. While white can signify purity and cleanliness, it can also feel very cold and uncaring. Black can indicate evil and darkness. Brown can mean dirty and unclean.
In addition, the colors can be combined to enhance the mood of the office space. Complementary colors are colors that are separated by another color on the color wheel. Contrasting colors fall on opposite sides of the color wheel and harmonizing colors are those that are right next to each other. Any of these can be used to make the office space look and feel extraordinary.
The color of an office space says something to all who view it. Even if it saying it with the lack of color. With the wide selection of colors and color combinations to choose from, the toughest decision might be not should the office space be painted, but which one should be chosen. Whether the office space is full of cool, warm or neutral colors or a combination of colors, the only question should be will it speak soothingly, loudly, or somewhere in between. |
