Office Space, Carpeting or Flooring in an Office Space

In an office space, the floor can contribute to both added duties and acoustics of the space. If the business is being built from scratch, this is something that can be considered before completion. If it is an office space that is being rented, it might be a question for the owner. What are the differences between carpeting and office space and flooring?

Carpeting is nice for the obvious reasons. It feels much softer on the feet, and it can look plush and colorful. In addition to the nice feel and look, a carpet adds acoustic muffling. How does acoustic muffling help the business? In an office without much decoration, and the bare minimum wall decor, the noise bouncing off the walls will again be reflected off the floor. In a carpeted office, the sound will be muffled by the carpet before it can bounce of the walls and be reflected by the floor again, only to be bounced around a room indefinitely. This is why an empty room always sounds louder then a full room. With nothing to stop the sound, it can bounce off all solid surfaces indefinitely.

The downside to carpeting, is that it can require more maintenance. Some carpets seem to attract dirt and some can show a spot like a blinking billboard. In addition to added maintenance, a carpet also conducts more static electricity. This means in an office space filled with computers, there is a greater risk for shock and electrical currents.

Flooring can add a nice effect to the office space. An office space that has beautiful cherry hard wood floor can make a great impression on a client. Linoleum can be very easy to care for and shine giving the office space a larger appearance. Tile can be decoratively designed with a picture or even the company logo. There are many choices in flooring. Flooring doesn't help with the acoustics of an office space, but it is easier to clean.

Whether the business has carpeting or flooring, it can make a statement, make the office space feel more inviting, and aid in dampening the noise to improve productivity. A combination of the two can also be included in an office space. Carpeting can be placed in the walkways while flooring can be directly under the computer desks. In a reception area, a carpet can lead to the front desk while leaving the other areas of the room carpet free. In a building, there can be an office space dedicated to equipment and tiled with the company logo, while each other office space is carpeted.

To summarize, carpeting can aid with acoustics, it can add sophistication and comfort. Flooring can give the feel of cleanliness and tidiness. There is no right answer regarding carpet and flooring. Nothing says this type of business must have carpet and this one must be hardwood floor. It is simply a statement about the business. What does the office space say, or fail to say, about the company?
