Office Space, Tips on How to Green Your Office Space |
Everyone, it seems, is trying to do whatever they can to save the planet these days. You can do your part, too, by making your office space more environmentally-friendly. Try the following suggestions.
First of all, insist that all employees use real coffee mugs for their coffee-no more Styrofoam. Similarly, make a policy that no more plastic forks, spoons, or knives are allowed in the office. Keep several of each utensil in the office breakroom or kitchen area. Or, tell employees that they need to bring in their own when needed. Make sure that you follow this policy as well-don’t let a staff member see you drinking out of a paper cup from Starbucks one morning! It is important to be consistent.
Next, begin using environmentally-friendly supplies in your office space. Go to any large office supply store (online or brick-and-mortar) and you might be surprised to see just how many options there are. You can find green writing instruments, envelopes, mailers, notebooks, computer paper, and many other types of supplies. Try to stock your office space with as many green supplies as you can find.
Also, encourage employees to reuse paper whenever possible. For example, many times people inadvertently print too many copies of a particular document. Or, perhaps they print a paper and later find it to have errors. Instead of throwing these pages away, people can reuse these by using the blank backs of the pages for notes. You can keep a box next to each printer in which people can place pages like this for anyone to use.
Aside from reusing paper, promote the idea of going paperless whenever possible. A great deal of the paperwork that many office spaces prints each day isn’t really all that necessary to have printed. A digital copy could suffice. So, talk with your employees about only printing hard copies of documents that require a customer or client signature, for example. Make sure you have your computer set to be backed up to an external hard drive or to a server each evening so there is no risk of losing information.
Your office equipment sucks up a lot of energy-probably more than you realize. So, when you are not using your computer make sure to put it in sleep mode. And, when you are finished with your office space for the night, make sure to turn it completely off.
The lighting in your office space is probably not very green at the moment. Switch out your conventional bulbs and replace them with compact fluorescent bulbs. Yes, this will initially cost more money because compact fluorescent bulbs do cost more. But, over time your office space will not use as much energy-and this translates into a savings for you. Plus, using less energy is definitely a better choice as far as the environment goes.
Of course, there are many more things you can do to green your office space. And, after you implement these tips, chances are your employees may become motivated to try more environmentally-friendly changes in your office space. |
